Over the past week, I’ve encountered a series of unexpected encouragements from various sources and at unforeseen moments. None of these affirmations were actively sought; they simply emerged in passing, almost as if to reassure me, “Hey, you’re doing OK, and I appreciate who you are becoming.” This period has also afforded me the chance to engage in uplifting conversations with others, which has been both enjoyable and thrilling.

Typically, I miss these fleeting opportunities due to hesitation or self-doubt, but on these occasions, I found the courage to express words of love, support, and affirmation, refusing to let fear of seeming overly emotional hold me back. Reflecting on our journey, particularly as we navigate the significant milestones of our children’s lives—Elder Nearest-and-Dearest graduating this summer and Younger Nearest-and-Dearest successfully completing her first year of university—has prompted deeper contemplation about our growth. Nearly a year into our new chapter as Empty Nesters, it’s essential to acknowledge and sit with our experiences, as well as to honor those who have inspired us along the way.

This reflection serves not only to recognize the dreams we’ve long held but also to reaffirm our commitment to encourage and uplift the younger individuals in our lives who stand on our shoulders as they carve their own paths.

Encouragement is a powerful act that often requires us to step beyond our comfort zones and embrace vulnerability. At its core, the very word “encourage” contains “courage,” reminding us that genuine affirmation can be daunting. Whether it’s voicing love for a friend, recognizing someone’s resilience in tough times, or simply acknowledging the beauty in another, these acts can foster connection and hope. As Brene Brown highlights in “The Gifts of Imperfection,” courage embodies the willingness to speak openly from the heart about our experiences.

Often, it is easier to stay silent when we could uplift someone with kind words. Yet, those moments when we choose to encourage can be transformative, both for ourselves and the recipients of our words. We should actively seek opportunities to appreciate those around us—be it friends, colleagues, or family—especially those who might need a boost of confidence. It is essential to express how profoundly they impact our lives. So, who in your network needs encouragement today? Let’s take a moment to reach out and remind them of their worth, for in doing so, we strengthen our own humanity. The choices we make to encourage others indeed take courage, but the rewards are immeasurable.
